Donnie Wahlberg does lots of good stuff as Detective Danny Reagan on “Blue Bloods.” His character is memorable, yet he’d change one thing.
What would it be? More laughs for the buttoned-up member of the New York Police Department.
“There’s a lot of humor in law enforcement, to get through some of the hard times,” Wahlberg said in a 2019 interview with CBS.com. “I would write him a few more jokes!”
‘Blue Bloods’ Shows Life On, Off The Clock For Police Officers
Imagine Danny Reagan cracking more jokes with his partner and among family members. Classic TV fans might connect police humor more with “Police Squad!” than “Blue Bloods.” The CBS crime drama, though, does make room for silliness when it’s key to a scene.
Also, “Blue Bloods” does its best to reflect police work both on the beat and off the clock.
Wahlberg’s character had to deal with the death of his TV wife a few seasons ago. It brought a different view of Danny into “Blue Bloods” fans’ homes. The show presents different situations involving its characters and even different cases police officers deal with every day.
Besides his acting work, Wahlberg, obviously, is known for his music career as a member of “New Kids on the Block.”
Don’t fret about whether or not he’ll be back this fall as “Blue Bloods” enters Season No. 12 as part of the CBS lineup. He will join Tom Selleck, who plays NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, in returning to the show. Others expected to come back include Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou, and Will Estes. Moynahan plays Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan, Cariou plays retired NYPD Commissioner Henry Reagan, and Estes plays Sergeant Jamie Reagan.
Wahlberg Works At Making Marriage To Jenny McCarthy Work
Speaking of laughter, Wahlberg married actress-comedian Jenny McCarthy back in 2014. This is Wahlberg’s second marriage as well as McCarthy’s. She did date comedian Jim Carrey for a period of time, too.
But Wahlberg talked about how much they both have in common during an interview with CBS in 2014.
“Her and I sort of came around in the same era, and [have] both, you know, gone through divorces and gone through so many similarities, both professionally and personally,” Wahlberg said. “And to discover each other, really for the first time, in our 40s – we never really met through all those years. We just hit it off, yeah. And very similar sort of mentalities and spirituality, and very similar philosophies.”
Wahlberg stays busy on “Blue Bloods.” McCarthy hosted her own talk show on SiriusXM’s Stars channel for six years before ending it in 2020. The couple currently live in Chicago. Wahlberg has two sons from his first marriage to Kimberly Fey, which ended in divorce in 2008.
