“Blue Bloods” has given actor-musician Donnie Wahlberg to work up close with Tom Selleck and learn a little more about the acting profession.

Wahlberg, who plays Detective Danny Reagan in the CBS police drama, talked about working with Selleck in an interview with TV Tango.

“It’s fun, interesting, and sort of electric, having played Danny and having to deal with his dad, Frank,” Wahlberg said. Selleck plays NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, Danny’s father, on “Blue Bloods.”

‘Blue Bloods’ Star Loves Simply Being Himself on Set Every Day With Selleck

“At the same time, it’s fun being Donnie and being every day on the set with Tom,” Wahlberg said. “Tom is a leader himself. He is a very experienced, very smart guy. Very dedicated, much like myself. There are times when we both see the hidden game, and we both want the same thing but we have very different ideas on how to do it.”

Wahlberg, who burst onto the music scene as one of the original “New Kids on the Block,” said it’s kind of a dance between himself and Selleck.

“Knowing when to step up, knowing that this is the time Tom could really use my input,” Wahlberg said. “Or knowing when to step back and knowing this is the time I gotta trust Tom. It is very truthful off-screen as it is on-screen for Danny and Frank.”

Wahlberg Found Comfort In Working On Scenes With Fellow Actor

But Wahlberg admitted in the interview that having this type of interaction on “Blue Bloods” with Selleck is fun.

“It really makes the job great for me,” he said. “It’s fun coming to work every day and working on scenes with Tom and working out ideas and knowing how I am and how I like to work and also knowing and respecting who he is. We have a great mutual respect.”

Wahlberg owns up to that “much like the characters, there is an experience difference.”

“There is a sense that rings true in every scene we do on-screen and off,” he said. “It makes it very real for me.”

“Blue Bloods” returns for yet another season this fall. Besides Selleck and Wahlberg, Will Estes [Sergeant Jamie Reagan], Bridget Moynahan [Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan], and Len Cariou [Retired NYPD Commissioner Henry Reagan] will be back, too.

It will be back on CBS in its familiar 10 p.m. Eastern, 9 p.m. Central timeslot. Vanessa Ray and Marisa Ramirez also will return to their roles of Officer Eddie Janko-Reagan and Detective Maria Baez, too. Fans will have to be on the lookout to see if Sami Gayle will make a guest appearance as Nicky Reagan this season.

Oh, and for you hardcore Outsider fans, you better believe those Reagan family dinner scenes will pop up as well.
