It goes without saying that Tom Selleck is a TV legend. And when he’s not filming Blue Bloods, he’s enjoying the benefits of a historic career.
Selleck isn’t a guy who is often out in public for the fun of it. While certain actors and celebrities live for the spotlight, the Blue Bloods star preserves the comfort of his personal life. Namely, his family and his ranch.
Back in April of 2020, Tom Selleck opened up about what his life is like outside of the show. Talking to People, the 76-year-old actor revealed the importance of his Ventura, California home.
“I’m a fairly private person,” Selleck said. “And I’ve always treasured the balance between work and time with my family. It’s always about them.
“My relationships and my ranch keep me sane.”
According to People, the ranch used to be an avocado farm, but went out of operation due to drought. Now, it hosts 1500 native trees and the Blue Bloods star likes to get his hands dirty on the property.
“I do grunt work and I make the rounds. I like watching things grow. It’s a retreat.”
All in all, it sounds like a pretty sweet setup. Outsider knows as well as anyone the special nature of getting outdoors and doing something with your hands. Hearing that Tom Selleck is just as passionate for the old-fashioned goodness of life as we are only makes us love the Blue Bloods actor more.
Why Blue Bloods Star Tom Selleck Left Magnum P.I.
In the same interview, “private person” Tom Selleck spoke more on the public spotlight as well as his time as the legendary Thomas Magnum on Magnum P.I.
While the show brought great fame and success to Selleck, it had serious drawbacks.
“I quit Magnum, not because I didn’t like it or I was tired of it,” he explained. “I was tired from it. And I wanted a three-dimensional life because I didn’t have one.”
It’s totally understandable. Being on one of the most successful programs of the 1980s can do that. Selleck explained that he didn’t truly understand what it meant to be that famous until he was in it.
“I knew intellectually what it would mean in terms of being a public person, but until you’ve lived it, there’s no way to understand it,” Selleck said. “I had a feeling of, ‘I don’t think I’m cut out for this.’ ”
However, he is still proud of what he’s accomplished. The life of a celebrity may not be exactly what he thought, but he has no regrets.
“I’m proud of my work, I still love what I do, and I have my family,” the Blue Bloods star said. “I’ve been enormously fortunate.”
