The stars of “Blue Bloods” have natural chemistry. And that’s why they were able to hit the ground running when it came time to shoot the pilot episode.

In a 2017 interview with “CBS This Morning,” Jamie Reagan actor Will Estes said the cast just clicked together from their very first scene on “Blue Bloods.” He said they basically all ended up together forced to shoot one of the show’s epic family dinner scenes when they had barely met.

“You know, it sorta clicked from the beginning,” Estes said. “One of the first scenes that we shot was the family dinner scene. In the pilot. [It was like,] ‘You guys have all been family your whole lives, and action.’ And something about it worked, I guess.”

“That was a little scary, because we had no relationship,” Estes’s co-star Tom Selleck added. “We just kind of said, ‘How do you do?’ and sat down to family dinner.”

Estes Was Excited to Join ‘Blue Bloods’

In a 2019 interview with Liveabout.com, Estes discussed “Blue Bloods” and shared how excited he’d been to join the show.

“It’s got a lot of action, a lot of excitement and the police battle between right and wrong,” Estes said of “Blue Bloods.” “It’s all set around this wonderful family drama with Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, and Len Cariou. Donnie is my older brother and Bridget is my older sister. Donnie is a little rough around the edges detective and Bridget is a brilliant assistant D.A. In the pilot, she winds up having to bail Donnie out of some hot water he gets himself into. Tom Selleck plays the chief of police and Len Cariou is the grandfather who was the chief of police.”

And Estes reiterated something his co-star Bridget Moynahan has also said in interviews. Namely, that “Blue Bloods” is blessed with great writers.

“What’s equally as thrilling [as the cast] is that Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green, who were writers for ‘The Sopranos,’ wrote the [‘Blue Bloods’] pilot,” Estes explained. “I was more excited when I read this than anything I’ve read in a really long time and that was before I knew who was attached to it. Of course, working with Bridget, Donnie, Len, and Tom is equally as exciting.”

Heading into Season 12, the show’s acting and writing are stronger than ever. And “Blue Bloods” fans are presumably just as excited as the cast about the show’s renewal.
