“The Brady Bunch” star Barry Williams, who played Greg, reflects on why he never got to find love in a tropical paradise on the TV show “The Love Boat.”
Williams never appeared on the popular show, which featured a regular cast and guest stars having adventures out on the open ocean. The show ran for a total of nine seasons, plus several specials, leaving plenty of time for Williams to hop aboard.
But he never did, and not even Williams knows why. Several of Williams’ “The Brady Bunch” co-stars made guest appearances on the show. This includes Maureen McCormick, Eve Plumb, Christopher Knight, Robert Reed, and Florence Henderson. But the show’s producers never invited Williams to guest star on the show. He questioned if he offended someone without his knowledge.
“Ah, yes. There is. I just don’t know what the story is,” Williams told MeTV. “But I’m clear that somebody there had it in for me. I don’t know what it is. I just speculated, maybe I offended someone, somewhere, I don’t know! That’s not all. I’ve done a lot of TV. I didn’t do ‘Fantasy Island’ either. Those are both Aaron Spelling shows. I don’t know if there’s a connection there.”

The common denominator seemed to be Aaron Spelling. Spelling was an actor and producer behind some of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s biggest shows. In addition to “The Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island,” Spelling also had a hand in “Charlie’s Angels,” “Melrose’s Place,” and “Beverly Hills, 90210” among others.
Williams isn’t saying that Spelling was the cause of his snub from both shows. Perhaps, it was a coincidence. But Williams didn’t appear on “Fantasy Island” either. That show featured guest stars each week that came to the magical island.
The island would grant visitors their deepest wish, and audiences would watch said wish play out to both positive and negative outcomes. The show proved to be popular with viewers and ran for seven seasons and two TV movies.
But Williams didn’t seem to be out of work during that period either. The actor starred on “The Brady Bunch” and its various sequels and spinoffs in the years after. He also made various guest spots over the years in other sitcoms and shows. For instance, Williams has appeared in “Three’s Company,” “Highway to Heaven,” and “That 70 Show” to name just a few.
