The 2021 Billboard Music Awards are getting underway tonight. And throughout the day, we’ve been finding out some of the winners via social media. While many of the categories won’t be announced until the ceremony itself, several were announced in advance. Among them was the winner of Top Christian Album. None other than Carrie Underwood took home the award for her first-ever Christmas album, “My Gift.”

Carrie Underwood is a relative newcomer to the Christian album scene, however. She was in the running for the award alongside Zach Williams, Elevation Worship, We The Kingdom, and also Bethel Music.

“My Gift” was released in September 2020 and featured a mix of traditional Christmas songs and Carrie Underwood’s own original music.

“I’ve always wanted to make a Christmas album and it’s been a long time coming. Even though it has been a tough year for all of us. Sometimes I feel like the greatest realizations can be inspired by the most difficult times and make us more grateful for the things we do have and for what truly matters,” Underwood said in a press statement back in July of 2020.

Carrie Underwood’s More Recent Christian Album Has Found Major Success

The Billboard Top Christian Album Award isn’t the only thing Carrie Underwood has to be excited about, however. She just recently released another Christian album in March, called “My Savior.” In true Underwood fashion, the album enjoyed the #1 spot on both the Billboard Christian and Country charts. Further, that makes her the only country artist to ever have nine consecutive album debuts at #1, one for each one of her studio albums.

“My Savior” is comprised entirely of Christian songs. It’s based on her youthful memories of singing at a Baptist church in Oklahoma. In an interview with NPR, Carrie Underwood talked about why the Christian hymnals are so important to her.

“We would file in and sit in the pews and they’d say, ‘Open your hymnals to page…’ or whatever,” Underwood also said. “And off we went. I can hear the congregation singing. And I can hear certain voices of people that, you know, I grew up with who would be behind my left shoulder or that one lady that always kind of slid around and scooped her notes all over the place, the people that would sing harmony.”

The Country superstar is well-deserving of all the praise she’s gotten for faith-based music. “My Gift,” the Christmas album for which she just won the 2021 BBMA, came in the middle of the pandemic. And it was undoubtedly a source of comfort during the holidays for Christians everywhere.
