“Counting On” stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are addressing the cancellation of the show amid controversy surrounding their son Josh. The couple is the head of the Duggar family and starred in the spin-off of “19 Kids and Counting.”
TLC chose to cancel the show amid a pending trial for Josh Duggar. Authorities charged him with receiving and possessing child pornography. The reality star chose to plead not guilty to the charges. In a joint statement, Josh’s parents chose not to address the controversy. Instead, the Duggars thanked TLC for giving them the chance to share their story.
“It is hard to believe that more than 17 years have passed. Since we were first contacted by a production company wanting to do a one-hour documentary about the logistics of raising 14 children. Our family has grown (and grown-up!) before our eyes and on national television. And the journey has been miraculous—following God is an exciting adventure!” they wrote on their website.
They continued, saying that the show gave them the opportunity to spread messages of faith with families across the world. But critics have targeted both parents in the light of the Josh Duggar scandal. Likewise, some of the couple’s children have distanced themselves in recent years.
“Over the years, some of our most treasured moments have been those when we met children across the country. Who are alive today because of our testimony that children are a blessing—a special gift from God. And that the only real hope for individuals and families is a close relationship with Jesus Christ,” they continued.
‘Counting On’ Canceled Amid Scandal
For the Duggar family, this must feel a bit familiar at this point. The Duggars led the reality show world back in 2015 with “19 Kids and Counting.” But Josh Duggar garnered accusations of molesting five underage girls including his own sisters. As a result, the network canceled the Duggar’s show.
But TLC later approved a spinoff, distancing the family from the controversy. Josh Duggar admitted to the past abuse and promised to seek counseling at the time. In their statement, the Duggars chose not to address the situation with their son. Instead, they looked forward to the next step in their lives.
“We look forward to all the new adventures and endeavors that may come our way, and with so many grown children and wonderful grandchildren, we know our love will only continue to multiply!” they wrote.
They offered a message of thanks to the crew of the show.
“We are forever grateful for our film crew and so many others behind the scenes who have become like family to us over the years,” they wrote. “The wonderful experiences that filming has provided us will be treasured always, and we look forward to discovering what’s next for our family and sharing more with you along the way!”
