George Segal, a popular actor with over six decades worth of experience in the acting world, passed away at the age of 87 yesterday (March 23). His wife shared the news that Segal had passed away due to complications related to a bypass surgery he underwent.

He is most recently known for his role in the TV sitcom, “The Goldbergs.” Segal played the family’s funny grandfather, Albert “Pops” Solomon. His role represents the producer, Adam F. Goldberg’s, grandfather in real life. The series is considered semi-biographical.

Besides television, George Segal has also been in countless films like “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” “A Touch of Class,” “The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox,” “Fun with Dick and Jane,” and “Just Shoot Me!”

George Segal Co-Stars Pay Tribute

“The Goldbergs” is still currently on television on ABC. It is on season eight.

George Segal has been playing “Pops” on the show since it first premiered in 2013. His character is known for acting younger than his age suggests and giving interesting advice to the grandchildren.

Wendi McLendon-Covey stars in the show as Beverly Goldberg. She plays the overprotective mother of the family often nicknamed “smother” by the children. In fact, she goes as far as to meddle in their lives, often leading to embarrassment on the children’s end.

McLendon-Covey posted a photo of the two of them hugging and smiling together. She captioned it, “Didn’t know the last time I saw you would be the last time I’d see you.”

Several others commented on the photo expressing their sadness over his passing. Bevy Smith, known for her work on Bravo’s “Fashion Queens,” commented, “So sad, he was such a part of my childhood, a legendary actor, so sorry for your loss!”

According to Popculture, the last episode with Segal will air on April 7. Fans will get a chance to say goodbye to the actor and “Pops,” as the show is expected to be doing a tribute to him that day.

Other Tributes to Segal

Sean Giambrone, who plays Adam Goldberg, the youngest of the family, also took to Instagram to talk about his time with George Segal. He wrote, “My heart is broken. I lost a dear friend. Working with George was an honor and some of the happiest moments of my life. What a sweet & wonderful man. He was my confidant & teacher. When he smiled it changed my day. I wish everyone could have met him. I love you George and I’ll miss you so much. My prayers are with the family.”

On the show, Pops is considered Adam’s best friend and the two often go on little side adventures together.

His sister on the show, Erica, played by Hayley Orrantia, also posted about Segal. It’s clear that his time on the show was influential to everyone around him. She posted a sweet video of the two of them laughing hysterically together in a cute video.

She wrote in part, “To me, George Segal was invincible so I’m having a hard time believing that he is really gone. He was an absolute light that illuminated every room he walked into. His laugh was utterly infectious and so rewarding if you were the one who got him to do it …”

Until his last episode on April 7, fans can still watch him laughing and acting in episodes of “The Goldbergs.”
