“Jeopardy!” Tournament of Champions host Buzzy Cohen has his fair share of history with the game show and its beloved host. During his winning run back in 2016, Cohen channeled shades of the “Saturday Night Live” Celebrity Jeopardy! skits and teased Alex Trebek.
Buzzy Cohen went down as one of the most entertaining contestants in the history of the show. During his winning streak in 2016 and his Tournament of Champions run in 2017, Cohen endeared himself to audiences. Much of the entertainment value came as a result of his Final Jeopardy antics.
During a few of his Final Jeopardy rounds, Cohen had such leads over his competition that he didn’t even try to answer the prompt. Instead, he used the opportunities to earn a laugh from the crowd and have some with the longtime host.
For reference, a series of skits that aired on “Saturday Night Live” saw Will Ferrell play a version of Alex Trebek. He suffered hilarious abuse at the hands of his celebrity contestants, who included the likes of Sean Connery and Burt Reynolds. You can watch the comedic “Jeopardy!” interpretation below.
The Sean Connery character had a habit of insulting Will Ferrell’s “Jeopardy!” host, adding a “Trebek” to the end of his comments. Buzzy Cohen followed suit, but instead of insulting the real Alex Trebek, he merely wrote funny messages as his Final Jeopardy response.
Watch the ‘Jeopardy!’ Tournament of Champions Host Mess Around with Alex Trebek
In the first clip, Cohen looked absolutely delighted as the late “Jeopardy!” host read his message. “What is see you tomorrow Trebek?!” Cohen wrote as his response to Final Jeopardy. Trebek was surprised at the response initially. But he was clearly amused by the reference.
In the second clip, Alex Trebek knew what to expect. He prepared the audience for Buzzy Cohen’s antics.
“He’s watched a lot of the ‘Saturday Night Live’ take-offs of our ‘Jeopardy!’ show, particularly the abuse I have to take from Sean Connery,” Trebek said.
“Who is you aren’t rid of me yet Trebek?” Buzzy Cohen wrote as his response.
“You’re going to pursue this theme as long as you’re the champ, aren’t you?” Trebek said after reading the joking response. All Buzzy Cohen could do was nod and flash a cheeky grin as he tried to contain himself. He was very proud of his rapport with Trebek.
And as he should have been. The only reason he had the luxury of making jokes this way was his dominant performances. If his competing contestants were close enough to reach his score with their Final Jeopardy wagers, he’d never risk a response like that.
These days, Buzzy Cohen is entertaining us in a different way. He’s the “Jeopardy!” Tournament of Champions host at present. And the event is underway this week.
