Michael Landon passed away 30 years ago today. When he did, the world lost a stellar actor and filmmaker. Luckily, he left behind a body of work that future generations can enjoy as well as learn from. However, those closest to him lost so much more. His family lost a husband and father Those who worked with him lost a good friend. Melissa Gilbert, his pint-sized co-star on Little House on the Prairie, lost a little of both.
Melissa Gilbert and Michael Landon had instant chemistry. In fact, when she came in to do a screen test for the show, Landon knew she was right for the part. They went on to work together for over a decade. During that time, they became very close. In fact, when she made a Father’s Day post last month, she included Michael Landon.
Today, Melissa Gilbert is remembering Michael Landon on the anniversary of his passing.
Melissa Gilbert Pens Heartfelt Post Remembering Michael Landon
Earlier today, Melissa Gilbert took to her Instagram to post a sweet and lengthy message about her late co-star, friend, and mentor.
Melissa Gilbert starts by saying, “Today marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of this extraordinary man.” Then, she goes on to talk about the impact that Landon had on the world. About this, she wrote, “He touched so many lives with his talent, humor, integrity, compassion, and heart.” Gilbert goes on to acknowledge that Landon changed the course of her entire life. Without him, she may have never achieved fame. It wasn’t just the chance to star alongside him on Little House on the Prairie that changed her life, though.
Melissa Gilbert went on to say that she learned so much from Michael Landon, both professionally and personally. So, he didn’t just help start her career. He helped her develop as a person.
However, Melissa Gilbert is not dwelling on her loss today. Instead, she says, “First and foremost in my mind and heart are Mike’s children, their spouses, and their children.” She goes on to say, “I know that he is looking down on all of them just beaming with joy, pride, and love.”
Before wrapping her post up, Melissa Gilbert noted that Michael Landon’s legacy isn’t just the body of work he left behind. His real legacy is the family he left behind when he died and the lives he touched. Landon lives on through those who follow in his example.
Fittingly, Melissa Gilbert ended her tribute to Michael Landon with a quote from Little House on the Prairie. It might be the most heartwarming yet tear-inducing part of the post.
“Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that’s how I will remember you all. If you can only remember me with tears, then don’t remember me at all.”
