Actor Matthew McConaughey is an outsider, and he’s got the pictures to prove it. This weekend, the actor shared a photo of himself enjoying the great outdoors on social media.

“America’s best invention… national parks,” he posted to Instagram on Sunday.

Matthew McConaughey, Sustainability Whiz

Moreover, this is not the first time McConaughey has shown a streak of environmental awareness. In 2019, the actor designed and built an eco-friendly Australian cabin that is rented out to visitors for $150 per night.

The cabin features sustainable materials, with solar panels, no wifi and a hidden bar, according to Business Insider. It launched as part of Wild Turkey’s “With Thanks” promotional effort encouraging people to reconnect with the wild. (Matthew McConaughey is creative director at Wild Turkey and has co-created his own bourbon brand, Wild Turkey Longbranch.)

The actor was reportedly deeply involved in the design and also the construction process on the house. He donated vintage books and cassette tapes to the cabin, as well.

“I’ve always been in awe of Australia’s natural beauty,” McConaughey said in a statement announcing the cabin’s launch. “My hope now is that The Reserve will inspire Australians to reconnect with nature as an antidote to the frenetic pace of life.”

Some of the proceeds from the cabin will go to the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, a private organization that fights to preserve Australian wilderness.

National Park Week Is Coming Up

Meanwhile, April 17 to 25 is National Park Week. And the National Park Service (NPS) is teaming up with the nonprofit National Park Foundation to celebrate it. For starters, the NPS is forgoing entrance fees at the national parks that charge admission on the first day of the week.

National Park Week exists by presidential proclamation to recognize and appreciate America’s 400 national parks. It began during the presidency of George H.W. Bush, who designated it to mark the 75th anniversary of the NPS, per Park Chasers.

Once again, each day of the week features a different theme, from Volunteer Sunday to Wayback Wednesday to “Bark” Ranger Day. The NPS has also rolled out suggested hashtags for each day so that people can share their experiences in national parks each day of the week on social media.

So it looks like McConaughey will have occasion to post more national park pictures in the very near future.
