Count Matthew McConaughey as someone who cheered on Team USA as the Americans overwhelmed the Europeans for golf’s Ryder Cup.
The Academy Award winner and sports super fan, tweeted:

Matthew McConaughey loved the way the Americans won, beating the Euros, 19-9. It was Team Europe’s worst loss ever in Ryder Cup competition. As for Team USA, it also represented only its third victory in the last 10 Ryder Cups competed since 2000. Fans and golfers turned the course into one giant party.
Since we know Matthew McConaughey is a huge Texas Longhorn booster, he probably was giving a loud golf clap to Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler. Both were All-Americans for the Longhorn golf team.
Scheffller, a Ryder Cup rookie, had to play world No. 1 Jon Rahm, in Sunday’s head-to-head matchup. Scheffler clinched his match against Rahm on the 15th hole, giving the United States its first singles point, Sunday afternoon. Schleffler, who has never won a PGA tournament or competed in a pro team event, was the last Ryder Cup pick by captain Steve Stricker.
Scheffler had another rowdy Ryder Cup moment, Saturday. Playing with Bryson DeChambeau, Stricker hit a 16-foot birdie to break a tie in the Americans’ match against Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland. Scheffler pumped his fist, then chest bumped DeChambeau to celebrate. It was just one of many raucous moments on the course.
Matthew McConaughey Probably Gave a Golf Clap for Jordan Spieth
On Sunday, Spieth and Fleetwood were tied in their match as they came to the 18th hole. Both left their approach shots about five feet from the hole. Each conceded the hole to the other so that the match remained tied. It didn’t matter in the big Ryder Cup competitive picture.
In all, it was an excellent weekend for Matthew McConaughey. His Longhorn football team overwhelmed Texas Tech, 70-35, Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium. McConaughey is an official ambassador for Longhorn athletics. That’s why he used his Twitter account to send out inspiration.
“Pedal to the metal from the [sic] KO to the final 70-35,” McConaughey tweeted. “KnockOut—lottsa Longhorn GAS on the mental, physical and spiritual pursuit of greatness today—the tank is never full—keep fillin it— #hookem.”
McConaughey, who is famous for these sorts of big-picture, philosophical moments, was playing off the team’s new slogan “all gas, no brakes.”
The actor still is living the good life in Austin with his wife and three children. At some point over the next few months, he’ll make a decision about running for governor of Texas. He’s yet to declare a political party, but recent, in-state polling has him leading Greg Abbott, the incumbent governor, by nine points.
Matthew McConaughey said he’s mulling the poll results to see how they can factor in his decision.
“I’m measuring it,” McConaughey told “Set it Straight: Myths and Legends. “Look, it’s going to be in some capacity…I just, I’m more a folksy and philosopher-poet statesman than I am a, per se, definitive politician. So I go, well that’s a reason not to, but then I go, no, that’s exactly why you should. Because politics needs redefinition, but I’m measuring ‘what is my category? What’s my embassy?’”
