Dolly Parton made an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and shared details about her husband, Carl Dean, who she called “clairvoyant.”
The couple has been together for 56 years and married for 54. Parton, 74, has spoken out numerous times about her reclusive husband, 78, who prefers not to be in the limelight. However, he does not mind her lifestyle and the pair have made their individual preferences work within their relationship for decades.
During her appearance, Colbert asked Parton what she meant when the singer says “God speaks” to her through her husband. She shared details about her and her husband’s spiritual bond.
“We are so close. We’re so in tune with each other, I’ll be thinking about something that’s worrying me or grieving me. And I’ll pray about something, you know, kind of waiting for an answer,” Parton tells Colbert. “And he’ll sometimes just up and say something. It’s just like, ‘Well, I didn’t say anything to you about that!’
The singer says Dean senses how she’s feeling and just knows when something is off with her. She acknowledges that some people think its freaky that she says “God speaks” to her through Dean. Yet, Parton insists “it’s not like that,” and that God is not speaking words to her directly or through Dean.
“I don’t know if he just senses how I’m feeling. But, I have always said that God speaks to me through him,” Parton explains. “I guess that’s what love is. I guess when you’re in tune, and you know somebody so well, but I have often said that.”
Parton Speaks More About the Couple’s Special Bond
The country musician says her husband is a very empathetic person. She thinks his empathy, paired with their 56-year long relationship, allows them to share a special bond with one another.
“He’s very intuitive, too. I think he’s kinda clairvoyant at times,” Parton said.
In fact, the longtime couple chose to renew their vows a few years ago to mark 50 years of marriage. But, Dean has annoyed his famous wife in recent years following their renewed vows.
“Now he tells people that I’m his second wife,” Parton jokes. “I said, ‘Don’t say that! I’m still the only one!'”
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the country singer opened up about Dean’s private lifestyle in comparison to her public persona. She even joked about fans thinking Dean is imaginary since it’s a rarity he’s seen with his famous wife.
“A lot of people have thought that through the years because he does not want to be in the spotlight at all. It’s just not who he is,” Parton said of Dean. “He’s, like, a quiet, reserved person. He figured if he ever got out there in that, he’d never get a minute’s peace. And he’s right about that.”
Parton says Dean did not choose the celebrity lifestyle. But, he did choose her. So they’ve managed to make both work for each of them.
