During a live video posted to his Facebook page, Garth Brooks reveals why his 15th anniversary with musician, Trisha Yearwood, is so special.
An emotional Brooks shares that this is the longest he’s been married. “This is the longest I’ve ever been married…so it was new territory for me. So it was a big one. And I’ve really really enjoyed these 15 years,” said Brooks.
Brooks Said Yearwood’s Mother Inspired His Confidence As A Man
During the same video, Brooks talks about a time when his confidence was breaking and how a comment from Yearwood’s mother turned it around.
“I found my confidence when a rag mag was really hitting on me and Trisha in the late 90s. Just hitting and gnawing and nailing and nailing it,” said Brooks. “And then Gwen Yearwood, Trisha’s mama, said, ‘Well, I would be proud if Garth Brooks was my son-in-law.’ And that turned everything for me as an individual, as a man, as a guy from that point forward. Because I just loved her and thought she had the greatest class. So that just gave me that [confidence]” Brooks continued.
Garth Brooks Has Known Yearwood for 33 Years
Brooks and Yearwood first met in 1987 while recording a demo track. At the time, both musicians were unknown. During an interview, Yearwood revealed that she received $10 for her contribution that day. Brooks left the session with nothing. Although the couple hit it off upon first meeting, they didn’t start dating until years later.
During an interview with Ellen Degeneres in 2013, Brooks opened up about how he felt when he first met Yearwood. He said he felt the way someone feels “like when you just meet your wife.” Yearwood recalls having a connection with Brooks but jokingly says she “had no idea he’d turn out to be Garth Brooks!”
The couple took the time to allow their relationship to develop before going public in 2002. Three years later Brooks proposed in front of a crowd of over 7,000 people and the couple have been together ever since. Even after so long, Brooks still can’t get enough of his wife. Brooks says, “And I gotta tell you, if you like her and don’t know her you’ll love her, and if you love her and don’t know her you’re gonna worship her. She’s the real deal and I’m very lucky.”
