Tim McGraw paid tribute to country legend Glen Campbell at the 87th Academy Awards show. McGraw performed a moving rendition of “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” 6 years ago at the 2015 Academy Awards.
This track was the final song that Campbell wrote. The late country icon wrote it for the 2014 documentary, “I’ll Be Me,” about Glen Campbell. The track that turned out to be the theme of the film was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars. It lost to the track “Glory” from the film “Selma.” However, the tune won a Grammy Award.
Prior to performing the poignant track, McGraw and his wife Faith Hill walked the red carpet. McGraw wore a black tux but only put on his signature black cowboy hat to sing Campbell’s song. McGraw sits alone on a stool on the Oscar stage. Lights fill the void space behind him. The “Humble and Kind” singer starts the song a cappella. Then a band joins him in the background. However, the performance remains intimate as McGraw sits alone.
Tim McGraw Steps in to Perform Campbell’s Song
Campbell was initially slated to perform his song “I”m Not Gonna Miss You.” However, he was unable to attend but his wife Kim and daughter Ashley represented him at the ceremony.
Additionally, McGraw substituted in to sing Campbell’s song. What’s more Kim and Ashley seemed moved by the performance once McGraw finishes the song. They look at each other and smile, according to Country Music Family.
Glen Campbell Pens Last Song
In 2011, Campbell received the devasting news that he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The diagnosis was heartbreaking, but Campbell didn’t let it slow him down.
Before he lost his ability to sing, the “Rhinestone Cowboy” embarked on one last tour. This is the tour that sparked the film “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me.” It shows his struggles while out on the road.
During that time, Campbell teamed up with fellow songwriter, Julian Raymond to write “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.” The song is a love letter to his wife and children.
The lyrics are dripping with emotion and heartbreak.
“You’re the last person I will love / You’re the last face I will recall / And best of all, I’m not gonna miss you / Not gonna miss you,” some of the lyrics read.
Campbell passed away on Aug. 8, 2017. He was 81-years-old.
