Country singer Travis Tritt is a fan of the U.S. Marine Corps.
On Tuesday, Tritt sent out a tweet recognizing the Marines on their 245th anniversary. “Today the @USMC turns 245 years old,” Tritt tweeted. “Happy Birthday to our Marine Corps and thank you for your devoted service to our nation!”
Tritt Recognizes the Military
Tritt has previously recognized servicemembers in a number of ways. He called attention to the struggles veterans face in the music video for “Anymore,” the second single from his 1991 album “It’s All About to Change.”
He has also performed for the USO. And in 2005, he joined the Special Operations Warrior Foundation to honor the volunteers who tried to rescue the American hostages in Iran about four decades ago.
“Our troops are willing to put their lives on the line to protect our freedom and spending time with them is a privilege,” Tritt told the Washington Times.
Marines Celebrate Despite Pandemic
For its part, the Marine Corps has released a video celebrating its 245th birthday. The video features Dorothy Cole, who served in World War II. At 107, she is currently the oldest living Marine.
“No matter who you are do some kind of service for your country,” Cole said in the video. “I have always been proud to say I was in the Marine Corps.”
The Marines have had to cancel the traditional Marine Corps birthday ball, Stars and Stripes reported. It usually features dancing, presenting the colors, and a cake cut with a sword.
The coronavirus pandemic put an end to that. But Marine commanders will record videos of cake-cutting and send messages to the troops. Each unit will watch the recording at its own socially distanced ceremony.
“Every Marine will have the opportunity to honor our birthday while ensuring the health and readiness of our force,” spokesman Capt. Pawel Puczko told Stars and Stripes.
