Country singer Shania Twain is sharing a cute video of a Canadian child’s dance moves on her Twitter account.
But she’s also reminding people to think of the less fortunate children her charity helps this holiday season.
Twain Shares Monday Motivation
“Look at these #mondaymotivation moves!” Twain tweeted Monday. “Josiah is supported by the @shaniakidscan Clubhouse in Bramption Ontario at the Sir Winston Churchill Public School. He asked to hear my music for the first time since he kept hearing my name! So awesome!”
Shania Kids Can is a 501(c)(3) charity in the U.S. and a Canadian registered charity in Canada. The Clubhouse program operates through schools that qualify for funding.
The charity sets up a kids’ clubhouse in the schools that partner with it. Then it hires staff, furnishes the program space and brings in food and office supplies to get the program going.
The program provides academic support, food, therapy, vocational training, life skills training and talent development for the kids. It also hooks them up with “buddy” support from an older student.
Inspired by Her Own Experience
Twain founded the charity in 2010 to alleviate the sufferings of children with challenges at home, informed by her own childhood experiences.
“The goal of the Shania Kids Can Charity Foundation is to create a program in primary schools that recognizes and assists students who fall into the gap between a dysfunctional home life and qualifying for a social service intervention,” Twain wrote. “These are children who may be experiencing abuse or neglect outside of school that may not be obvious, or children who are not necessarily being abused or neglected but [whose] social and educational experience at school is affected due to personal life issues which are out of their control.”
Further, Twain shared some painful memories from her childhood. Both poverty and neglect shaped her youth.
“I know that in my youth I would have benefitted from a support system at school,” Twain added. “Instead, I went to school concerned about being ridiculed for being inferior in various ways, while at the same time anxious about what excuse I was going to come up with for not being able to participate in hot dog day that lunch hour, for example.”
