In a clip from the most recent episode of NCIS, Fornell asks Gibbs some tough questions he needed to hear. Fornell has been on the series since its early days, and he’s always been an incredibly close friend to Gibbs. So of course, he was the one to really probe Gibbs on some tough subjects.

As it looks like Gibbs’ time as an investigator might be ending, Fornell questions why Gibbs is still giving his life to the job. Why he’s still hunting down bad guys and only focusing on his career. Gibbs has given up a lot over the past years. This conversation with Fonell lays down some solid reasons why it may be time for Gibbs to hang his hat soon.

“You always find some way to justify staying in the hunt,” he said. “What the hell are you doing? Still chasing bad guys.”

Gibbs doesn’t seem to understand.

“It’s what I do,” he shrugs.

“It’s all you do,” Fornell says. He even tells Gibbs that he’s clearly still doing this job to “fill the void” inside him. Ouch! But… let’s face it, it’s a bit true

“We’ve both lost jobs. We’ve both lost wives, more than one. And now I’ve joined your club by losing a kid,” Fornell tells him. The two have had some deeply shared experiences over the years. Fornell lost his daughter, however, last season.

“Chasing bad guys may not be the answer you think it is,” Fornell finishes. You can watch the intense conversation below.

Gibbs Actor Mark Harmon May Leave ‘NCIS’

It’s no secret in the fan base that Mark Harmon may choose to leave NCIS after this year. Therefore, scenes like that between Gibbs and Fornell where Fornell is encouraging him to pursue a different life for himself hold a whole new weight. Harmon was reportedly eyeing a departure from the show last year but agreed to stay on for another year when he learned CBS may cancel the show without him.

It’s hard to tell how much longer Gibbs will stay on the show, and if NCIS will continue without him. Fans are already frustrated at the amount of cast turnover that’s happened over the years. Ellie Bishop actress Emily Wickersham recently departed the series, for instance.

Some fans still have high hopes, however, that Gibbs may decide to return to the team. This week’s episode saw him and the team finally hunt down that serial killer they’ve been chasing. Unfortunately, that meant he had to say goodbye to investigative journalist Marcie Warren, who he had been working with closely on the case.

If you want to see what unfolds on NCIS, you can tune in every Monday night at 9/8 Central on CBS. You can also stick around after for a new episode of the newest spinoff series to the franchise, NCIS: Hawai’i.
