Hollywood icon Nicolas Cage never goes long without a new movie lined up, and his next role has recently been confirmed. The actor will portray one of Tinseltown’s most famous monsters when he plays Dracula in Universal Pictures’ upcoming film Renfield.

There has been numerous movies through the years that involve Bram Stoker’s infamous character from his 1897 novel Dracula. However, the new Universal film will focus primarily on Dracula’s henchman, R.M. Renfield. Universal cast 31-year-old actor Nicholas Hoult in the title role.

In Stoker’s original book, Dr. John Seward oversees Renfield who is an inmate at an insane asylum. The doctor assumes Renfield is suffering from delusions that make him eat living creatures in hopes of obtaining their life-force. However, Renfield is actually a servant of Dracula. Universal Pictures has not revealed plot details so far. The film is reportedly set in the present day. It’ll be interesting to see what Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult bring to this modern take on the classic tale.

Director Chris McKay will be at the helm of the new film. Further, it is based on an original story from Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. In addition, a report from Deadline stated that writer Ryan Ridley is in charge of the script. McKay will also reunite with producing partner Samantha Nisenboim who will executive produce the project. Skybound Entertainment’s team of Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst will act as producers on the movie as well.

Forever working, Cage has turned in multiple strong performances in recent years. He received rave reviews for 2018’s Mandy2021’s Pig, and next plays himself in the highly-anticipated The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Nicolas Cage Currently Filming New Western ‘Butcher’s Crossing’

As mentioned before, Nicolas Cage is always working and always has a new role lined up. He’s currently filming a new western titled Butcher’s Crossing, and fans got their first look at his character last month.

According to Deadline, Gabe Polsky is directing the western and production has already started filming in Montana. Nic Cage will play one of the lead roles named Miller who is a buffalo hunter.

The upcoming movie is based on a novel written by author John Williams. The book, which originally came out in 1960, goes by the same name as the new movie, Butcher’s Crossing.

“The story is about a young Harvard dropout who seeks his destiny out West by tying his fate to a team of buffalo hunters led by Miller. Together, they embark on a harrowing journey risking life and sanity,” the synopsis reads. “The title refers to the small Kansas town where the two intersect in the novel’s story, which is set in the 1870s.”
