She was married to her Days of Thunder co-star Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001, and now, Big Little Liars star Nicole Kidman is reflecting on the relationship 20 years after the split.
During her recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Nicole Kidman revealed her thoughts about the press being so focused on her relationship with Cruise and if the public attention really annoyed her. “I was young. I think I offered it up?”
Nicole Kidman then stated she may have been a bit more “trepidatious,” but she was always trying to be as open as possible. “I just prefer to live in the world that way. I’m wary at times, and I’ve been hurt. But at the same time, I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly showdown approach.”
Nicole Kidman also shared that her now-husband, Keith Urban, said that when he met her he asked, “How’s your heart?” She apparently told him it was open.
Nicole Opens Up About Being Happily Married To Then-Husband Tom Cruise While Filming ‘Eyes Wide Shut’
In a 2020 interview with the New York Times, Nicole Kidman did open up about being happily married to her then-husband Tom Cruise while filming the 1999 mystery psychological drama film Eyes Wide Shut.
“We were happily married through that,” Nicole Kidman recalled. She also stated that she and Cruise would go-karting after the film’s most intense scenes. “We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning. I don’t what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.”
Nicole Kidman shared with the media outlet that she and Cruise loved learning from Eyes Wide Shut director Stanley Kubrick, who passed away shortly before the film premiered in July 1999.
Nicole Kid then said that the film’s shooting took two years. She and Cruise also had two children, Isabella Jane and Connor Antony. They were all living in a trailer on the lot primarily. The former couple would also make spaghetti because Kubrick liked to each with them sometimes. “We were working with the greatest filmmaker and learning about our lives and enjoying our lives on set.”

While also talking about Kubrick, Nicole Kidman opened up about the director wanting full-frontal nude scenes. “We came up with a great agreement. He would show me the scenes with the nudity before they made it into the film. Then I could feel completely safe.”
Nicole Kidman recalled she didn’t say no to any of it and she wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to meme standing there nude and everyone laughing at her. “I was protected. So I got to explore a complicated marriage and the way in which Tom’s character is having those jealous images. I would never think of not wanting the storytelling to be told properly.”
