Popular zombie apocalypse drama series The Walking Dead is ending after 11 seasons.
AMC announced the show’s final season is set to run through late 2022, with 24 episodes to round out the final story arc. That leaves around 30 total episodes remaining.
There’s no reason to mourn the show, however. There’s a new spinoff set to air in 2023. Starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride as Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier, it will follow their pair on their adventures throughout the apocalypse. Current showrunner Angela Kang would handle the same duties for the new show.
There could also be an anthology series in the works. Tales of the Walking Dead would focus on “individual episodes or arcs of episodes on new or existing characters, backstories or other standalone experiences.” Chief content officer of The Walking Dead universe, Scott M. Gimple, would head up that project.
“We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead — brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies,” said Gimple. “This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. The Walking Dead lives.”
It may seem like time to mourn this zombie drama as a brand, but these extra projects say otherwise. Fans have plenty to look forward to, especially after 2020 ends. It’s been a difficult year, with other long-running series coming to an end.
