Jacki Weaver joined the cast of “Yellowstone” in Season 4 as Caroline Warner, the fearsome CEO of “too big to fail” hedge fund Market Equities. She promises to make life difficult for the Duttons and shake up fragile alliances in the valley. But will her reign of terror be short-lived?
Deadline has reported that the two-time Oscar nominee will soon be joining the cast of “Wildflower,” a dark coming-of-age comedy that follows a girl with a disabled parent and a fractious extended family from birth to adulthood.
Weaver joins a cast that includes Jean Smart, Kiernan Shipka, Alexandra Daddario, Dash Mihok, Charlie Plummer and Samantha Hyde. Limelight and eOne are financing the film.
Does Weaver’s Casting Mean the End of Her Character?
What does Weaver’s casting mean for her “Yellowstone” character? It is true that several series regulars have taken other jobs around their “Yellowstone” schedules, so her casting does not necessarily mean that Warner bites the dust in Season 4. But it might.
Thus far, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) has not killed off any women. (That’s Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) job.) Would he make an exception for Warner? Or might she die through her own overconfidence or carelessness?
As Season 3 ended, John and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) had flatly refused to sell a parcel of the Dutton Ranch to Market Equities to make way for the hedge fund’s airport. Jamie overruled them through some legal fine print. But then Angela Blue Thunder (Q’orianka Kilcher) and Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) announced that they were filing a class-action environmental impact lawsuit to stop the development, which the Duttons were welcome to join.
Now Warner is going to try to fix the mess that Roarke (Josh Holloway) and Willa (Karen Pittman) have made of the situation.
“She’s come to town to straighten things out,” Weaver explained in a behind-the-scenes featurette from the Paramount Network. “They might have met their match with Caroline.”
“She’s gonna shake them up,” Weaver added of Warner and the Duttons. “We’re gonna have some fireworks.”
Will the boss prove to be ruthless where her underlings were not? And just how ruthless were Roarke and Willa, really? We won’t know until we find out if they had a hand in the Season 3 finale attacks on the Dutton family.
At the very least, the Market Equities honcho shows a marked antipathy to the way of life that John and Rainwater, each in their own respective ways, are trying to preserve. As Warner says in one episode, “I cannot wait to pave this place over.”
Other ‘Yellowstone’ Stars Have Taken Side Jobs
Weaver would not be the first “Yellowstone” star to do another project when she isn’t busy with “Yellowstone.” Costner, Reilly, Rip Wheeler actor Cole Hauser and Kayce Dutton actor Luke Grimes are some of the cast members who have appeared in movies between seasons of “Yellowstone.” Teeter actress Jen Landon also appears on “FBI Most Wanted.” And Birmingham just joined the cast of a new Hulu series, “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
Still, is Market Equities likely to go away quietly while Weaver’s character lives? It certainly doesn’t look like it. So we wouldn’t bet much on her longevity if she persists in trying to pave the valley and chip away at the Dutton Ranch.
There’s really only one way to see Warner’s fate. “Yellowstone” Season 4 begins Sunday, Nov. 7, exclusively on the Paramount Network. Tune in to find out.
