Alongside several additions to the cast, some big names are coming back for Yellowstone Season 4 – including one that spells certain doom for the Duttons.
That face. Unmistakable to Yellowstone fans. If you thought we’d seen the last of Garrett Randall in Season 3, think again. Among Thursday’s whirlwind of Season 4 news comes the return of Randall actor Will Patton.
Just when we thought Jamie Dutton had a shot at redemption, his ol’ biological father had to go being all creepy. His “only way to rule” speech may make a monster out of Jamie yet, as Garrett Randall will play a big part in Season 4.
Per Deadline, actor Will Patton is officially on for Yellowstone Season 4 as a series regular. This means we’ll be seeing far more from Randall come Fall 2021. Surely, then, this means we’re to see how his relationship with – and influence over – son Jamie plays out. Which is both exciting and terrible news, depending on how entrenched in the lives of the Duttons you are.
When we last left Garrett Randall, he was playing mind games with the most swayable of Duttons, Jamie. The murderer told his son, point-blank, that the only way to rule the Dutton empire is to “kill the king.”
With Jamie proving himself capable of murder just episodes prior, it surely doesn’t feel a stretch to worry about Randall’s influence over his biological son.
Genetics: ‘Yellowstone’s Biggest Threat?
“John Dutton may have raised you, but did he love you, son? Does he love you, now? He loves the goddamned ranch. That’s all he ever loved. You standin’ here in my yard tells me you already know that. I’m your family, son. I’m the only one you got.”
So says Garrett Randall in Season 3 as son Jamie pays him a visit. For all his faults and strengths, will Jamie Dutton become more a force of good or destruction for his adoptive family? The rest of his now-iconic conversation with his biological father is telling, at the least:
Jamie: Everything that I worked for, everything that I thought I was, I’m going to lose. I was raised to run that ranch. I built it into what it is today.
Yellowstone Season 3 Episode 10: “The World Is Purple”
Garrett: Then run it.
Jamie: It’s not mine. It’s not for sale, not that I could afford it.
Garrett: Hell, nobody can afford the Yellowstone. The Yellowstone ain’t a ranch, it’s am empire. Empires you take.
Jamie: I don’t know how to do that.
Garrett: It’s the simplest thing on earth. You kill [John Dutton].
Jamie: I’m not a killer.
Garrett: You never killed? Yeah, you’ve killed. Of course, you’ve killed. You’re a Randall, and killin’ is our only gift.
As this dialogue reveals, it isn’t Garrett Randall himself who is the threat to Yellowstone, but the seeds he is planting in his son’s head. Armed with Randall’s style of “justice” – will Jamie do whatever it takes to secure himself not just a piece of the family ranch, but the whole damn pie?
With the return of Will Patton as Garrett Randall for Yellowstone Season 4, we may finally get our answer.
