Fans of Yellowstone are still reeling over the third season finale that left more questions than answers.

The closing moments of the final episodes saw three members of the Dutton family come under attack. John Dutton, the family patriarch, is shot in the chest several times as he tries to help a family change a flat tire. Kayce Dutton, John’s son, doesn’t fare much better.

He takes cover under a desk in his office as bullets rain down around him. Beth Dutton, John’s daughter, is the recipient of a package containing a bomb inside of it. The package explodes inside her office when her assistant opens it.

All three of the Duttons could very well be alive or dead as their fates are left a mystery to viewers. Many Yellowstone fans believe John Dutton survives the attack due to a well-placed cell phone in his shirt pocket. It seems as though the phone serves as a shield from the incoming bullets.

Even after taking several shots on the roadside, John is still alive and speaking to himself before the scene cuts away from him. The question now does he succumb to his injuries before the start of season four.

A new theory making the internet rounds suggest that not only is John alive he may a new ally joining him in seeking revenge.

John Dutton is not the only victim of the roadside shooting. He has stopped to help a young boy and his mother change a flat tire. As the van carrying the shooter arrives, the young boy is searching for the nuts and bolts he misplaced. He is not at the scene and therefore survives the assassination attempt. His mother, although not a target, is not so lucky and is shot and killed.

Yellowstone Fans Think John Dutton Could Take Boy in

The now motherless boy is going to need somewhere to stay and we know how much John Dutton is willing to take wayward children. He took Rip Wheeler after he kills his own father and turns him into a loyal Yellowstone Ranch worker and enforcer. His son, Jamie Dutton, was adopted by the Dutton family when he was just an infant.

While Tate Dutton doesn’t fit the profile as John’s biological grandson, he does provide an example of how John excels at raising young me. Through three seasons, Tate has gone from a curious boy to a capable young man on Yellowstone Ranch.

Now, without a mother to look after him, might John be willing to the young boy under his wing? It’s certainly worked out for him in similar scenarios. The boy will need to be molded by the Yellowstone Ranch the same it has done with several other youths.

Perhaps after some time on the ranch, John and the young boy seek out revenge on the attackers. Or perhaps John teaches him how to forgive and move on his life. Either way, this seems like a plausible theory based on how the show has gone so far.

Yellowstone expects to make its return this summer, meaning fans of the show won’t have to wait much longer.
