Dodgers’ Mookie Betts Speaks Out About the Recent Shooting of 2 L.A. Deputies

Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts is one of the first professional athletes to comment on the recent ambush shooting of two L.A. County deputies. The All-Star expressed frustrations over the shooting and has called on justice to be served for the sake of the critically injured deputies.

Mookie Betts, a former league MVP and one of the best players in baseball, tweeted that he was “angered” by the shooting.

Officials have offered a $300,000 reward for any information that could help authorities locate the shooter who ambushed the deputies. The reward has increased by more than $200,000 through the help of public and private donations.

The hospital has released one of the deputies involved in Saturday’s ambush attack, according to a statement from Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

The other deputy took shots to her face and torso during the attack. However, she managed to exit the car and radio for help. Both deputies are expected to make a full recovery from their wounds.

L.A. Sheriff Challenges LeBron James To Donate

During a recent interview, Sheriff Villanueva challenged James to contribute to efforts to find the gunman who shot the two deputies. Villanueva asked James to match the money already raised, which would have doubled the reward.

At the time, Villanueva said the reward money was up to $175,000. The total combines a donation of $100,000 from the county and $75,000 from two private individuals. Since then, donations have accumulated to bring the reward money up to $300,000.

“This challenge is to Lebron James. I want you to match that and double that reward,” Villanueva said. “I know you care about law enforcement. You expressed a very interesting statement about your perspective on race relations and on officer-involved shootings and the impact that it has on the African-American community.”

“And I appreciated that,” he continued. “But likewise, we need to appreciate that respect for life goes across all professions.”

Meanwhile, there was not an immediate response from James or his team to the sheriff’s challenge.
