Elton John Credits Zoom Alcoholic Anonymous Meetings as ‘Lifesaver’ Amid Pandemic

Rock music legend Sir Elton John is not a person who keeps his battle with alcoholism on an anonymous level, speaking about it freely.

John, who celebrated 30 years of sobriety in July, said Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held through Zoom have been a lifesaver for him during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He made the comments during the premiere episode of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Spotify podcast, “Archewell Audio.”

“I’m a recovering alcoholic so I have an AA meeting from this house every Sunday,” John said from his home in England. “I connect with my friends who I’ve known for about 30 years in the program, and that’s great.

“If it hadn’t have been for Zoom, I don’t know what we would’ve done,” John added. “It’s been a lifesaver.”

Many AA fellowships in the United States and around the world turned to Zoom earlier this year when the pandemic kept regular meeting places shut down.

Barbie Pays Tribute To Elton John With His Own Doll

Obviously, John is a performer who has worn a lot of different costumes on stage throughout his career.

He caught the attention of doll-maker Mattel, who has given its Barbie Doll a touch of the Elton John flair to create a doll after John’s image.

The Elton John Barbie Doll specifically pays homage to the singer’s Dodger Stadium concert in 1975, according to Yahoo. John became the first musical act to perform at the stadium in several years. The Beatles were the last act to take the stage nine years earlier.

Speaking to ABC News, John says the doll honors an era in which his fashion sense was at its peak.

“The ’70s were one of the most stylish decades of all time,” he says in the interview. “As I reflect on this era in fashion, I want to capture the essence and meaning of what ’70s fashion was all about-radical self-expression and glamour.”

From that concert, here is Elton John performing a cover version of The Who’s “Pinball Wizard.”
