Gabby Petito Case: Here’s the Last Time Brian Laundrie’s Parents Said They Saw Him

As more details unfold about missing woman Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie’s relationship, law enforcement officials are growing wary of statements Laundrie’s family made about when they saw him last.

Though Laundrie returned home to Florida on September 1 (without Gabby,) the 23-year-old opted to stay quiet and not speak with any FBI agents about her whereabouts. Then, on Tuesday, Sept. 14 Laundrie left his parent’s home. He was reported missing by his family three days later on Sept. 17.

At the time of writing, he is still missing.

Here’s the breakdown of what his parents, Chris and Roberta Laundrie, told North Port police officers about their son:

The evening of September 17, investigators went to the Laundrie home – to likely question Brian, Fox News reports.

However, they were shocked to learn Brian’s family hadn’t seen him since Tuesday. Around 6:20 p.m., officials entered the Laundrie home to question Brian and his parents. Forty minutes later, an officer came out of the home to grab what appeared to be an evidence envelope.

North Port Police spokesman Josh Taylor said investigators were unaware that Brian wasn’t there when they arrived at the home.

Further, Gabby Petito’s family said they had no idea Brian was missing and only learned about it during a televised interview.

“It’s the first time we’re hearing it,” Joseph Schmidt (Gabby’s father) said in an interview with CNN. “I am very caught off guard about hearing what we just heard.”

At the time, Taylor said he couldn’t confirm where Brian was and that he was a private citizen. While Brian was quickly labeled a person of interest in the case, he was not a suspect.

Events Leading to Gabby Petito’s Disappearance

Since that time, several concerning details have come to light about Brian and Gabby’s relationship. Following the domestic dispute incident in Utah on Aug. 12, the 911 call that led to their traffic stop was leaked.

In the call, a witness claims he saw the “gentleman slapping the woman” before the two drove off.

Additionally, witnesses say they saw the 2012 Ford Transit van Brian and Gabby were traveling in. It was near a remote spot in Grand Teton National Park. However, when they noticed the van, no one was nearby or in it.

Monday evening, FBI agents searched the Laundrie home with a warrant for several devices. Both Roberta and Chris Laundrie were escorted away by officers. However, it’s unclear if they will be charged with anything at this point.

Gabby Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11 after embarking on a road trip with Brian. She was last heard from in late August.

On Sept. 19, FBI agents searched the national park in Wyoming where they found remains matching Gabby’s description. Officials said that they “likely” belong to Gabby. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to confirm the identity of the remains.
