‘Home Improvement’ Stars Tim Allen and Richard Karn Reuniting for New Show, and Fans Are Loving It

Tim Allen and Richard Karn of “Home Improvement” are reuniting for a new show on the History Channel. The new show, “Assembly Required” (working title), was announced by the History Channel on Tuesday.

The channel ordered 10 episodes starring and executive produced by Allen, 67, and hosted and executive produced by Karn, 64. Although Karn made two guest appearances on “Last Man Standing” with Allen, it’s been over 20 years since the last time the pair worked together as co-stars. They both starred on the fan favorite ABC sitcom “Home Improvement” that ran from 1991-1999.

Concept of the New Show

The new show shares a similar back drop to “Home Improvement.” However, instead of it being a sitcom, it will be a competition series highlighting the best builders around the country in their own home workshops. In addition, the contestants will compete by fixing up regular household items that need repairing.

During the show, Allen and Karn will share insight into the history of the items being repaired. Each episode will highlight the men and women who created the items along with the techniques they used. The show will ask the contestants to not only rebuild these items, but try to improve on the originals as well.

Tim Allen Talks About His New Show

“Let’s face it — we’re living in a throwaway society,” Allen said in a statement. “We buy, break, replace … rinse and repeat. Whatever happened to repair and rebuild?! There are some people who unfriend, unfollow and dispose of anything that offends, annoys or breaks — so I’ve created a show to remind people of the satisfaction and pride that comes from rebuilding something on their own.”

“And who better to join me than my buddy from the old Tool Time days — Richard Karn!” he continued. “Now we’re talking More Power! Albert Einstein once said, ‘I’m not a genius, I’m just passionately curious.’ Well, let’s get curious! Even a chimpanzee would at least show interest, right? Wait — I think I just came up with another idea for the show! R-R-R!”

The network’s executive vice president and general manager Eli Lehrer added, “Our history is defined by the innovations of ordinary dreamers creating extraordinary things, from Thomas Edison’s light bulb to the Wright brothers’ first flight. We look forward to partnering with Tim and Richard, America’s beloved duo, as they challenge a new wave of skilled individuals to think out-of-the-box to build upon the innovations of those before them. We hope this series will inspire viewers to think twice about throwing out that old item, roll up their sleeves and rebuild it better.”

Fans Can’t Wait

As news broke about “Assembly Required,” fans took to Twitter to share their excitement for the announcement.

“Assembly Required” is scheduled to air on the History Channel in 2021.
