‘Jeopardy!’: Guest Host Dr. Sanjay Gupta Tears Up Talking About Charity He’s Helping During Guest Hosting Stint

Dr. Sanjay Gupta got emotional speaking about the charity he’ll help during his stint as Jeopardy! host. Each guest host chooses a charity, and the show matches the winning totals from their time at the lectern in a donation to that charity.

Gupta chose Odyssey Atlanta, a childcare and educational charity, that helps children in under-served areas reach their potential.

“The charity I chose is Odyssey Atlanta. And I’m probably going to get a little emotional, I’ll warn you because it has been a tough year for kids through this pandemic,” he said. “You know, I think a lot of kids, my kids have — they’ve done well. But I know a lot of kids haven’t been able to have the same resources. So, I thought it was a great opportunity to try and provide that for them. And the amount of money that this raised will transform some of these kids’ lives.

Gupta said that for many children in poor areas, the last year was a “year lost” of their education. “Odyssey Atlanta may help fix that for some of these kids.” Gupta has already shot his Jeopardy! episodes, but he couldn’t divulge how much was raised. He did say however that it was the “type of money that can change communities’ lives.”

Odyssey Atlanta thanked Gupta on their website.

“We are honored that Dr. Sanjay Gupta, renowned neurosurgeon and Atlanta resident, has selected Odyssey as his charity of choice while guest-hosting Jeopardy! for two weeks,” they wrote.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s episodes of Jeopardy! will begin airing Monday. He’ll remain at the podium until July 9th. After that, George Stephanopoulos takes over. One of his Good Morning America co-hosts, Robin Roberts, will follow him. Though the morning show hosts will only have a week on Jeopardy! each. You can see the full upcoming schedule here.

Jeopardy! Has Raised Nearly $2M for Charity

TODAY show co-host Savannah Guthrie raised $217,985 for The Bowery Mission. The charity helps New York’s homeless and hungry. That means Jeopardy! has now donated $1,912,961 to several different charities, according to

Alex Trebek and his wife, Jean, were also big supporters of charities that help the homeless. They donated $500,000 to the charity Hope of the Valley to convert an unused skating rink into the Trebek Center. The shelter will have 107 beds. It will also offer substance abuse counseling, job training and placement, and various mental health services.

Guthrie said she loved her time on the show, but she was shocked at how quickly the game moved. Her advice to the hosts that follow her is to stay loose and enjoy the moment.

“It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done,” she said. “It’s fast-paced, and you really, literally, have to be on your game.”
