The battle for the title of best chicken sandwich continues. This time KFC is looking to come out on top with “its best chicken sandwich ever.”

KFC recently announced that its newest chicken sandwich, boasting that it’s their “best” ever. Fans of the chain will be available to snag the sandwich in select stores starting today. Afterward, the company plans on expanding to all KFC restaurants in the U.S. by the end of February.

The news comes after a string of similar announcements from competitors such as McDonald’s, Shake Shack, Wendy’s, and Burger King. In 2019, many pointed to Popeyes for starting the chicken sandwich trend, which sparked other restaurants to try their hand at the beloved sandwich.

KFC ‘To Make Each Sandwich To Order,’ Chief Marketing Officer Says

Closely resembling the Popeyes chicken sandwich, KFC’s is made with a double-breaded chicken breast filet and pickles on a brioche bun, with either spicy or nonspicy mayo. KFC will also make each sandwich to order, a representative from the chain says.

“We tested the new KFC Chicken Sandwich in Orlando last spring, and we nearly doubled our sales expectations, so we knew that we had a winner,” said Andrea Zahumensky, chief marketing officer of KFC U.S.

“Many customers hadn’t considered KFC as a part of the chicken sandwich conversation, but anyone who tastes this sandwich will know, without a doubt, that we’re playing to win,” Zahumensky said in a press release on Thursday.

The highly anticipated sandwich will be available at select restaurants in Chicago, Kansas City, Louisville, Portland, Ore., St. Louis, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle, and Tulsa, Okla. starting Thursday.

KFC previously tested their version of the chicken sandwich in the Orlando, Fla., market in May. At the time, KFC commented that Popeyes had the chain beat in the chicken sandwich department.

“We wanted a chicken sandwich that really lives up to our legacy as the fried chicken experts, and, let’s face it, ours wasn’t the one to beat,” Zahumensky said in May.
