The battle is still well underway for the massive Mega Millions jackpot.
The total award amount was $750 million for the last drawing. On Friday someone from Michigan was one of eight people to win the $1 million prize. However, that huge cash prize is still sitting unscratched somewhere.
When Is the Next Mega Millions Drawing?
When is the next drawing to win?
The next opportunity to win the big cash prize will be on Tuesday, January 19. The prize will go up to $850 million and there will be a cash option of $682 million.
The drawings for Mega Millions are held at 11 p.m. ET. During the drawing, five balls are drawn from a set of balls that are numbered 1 through 70. Then the Mega ball will be selected from a set numbered 1 through 25.
You can watch the drawings on YouTube, here.
Past Lottery Wins
This is a reward like very few others. In fact, it is the second-largest jackpot in Mega Millions’ history. The largest prize ever was $1.537 million in 2018 by someone in South Carolina. The biggest lottery payout ever was from a Powerball ticket. The prize was $1.586 billion and was won on January 13, 2016.
Luckily for these people and even luckier for the person who will end up the grand prize, eight people walked away with smaller prizes on Friday instead. These tickets came from California, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
About 85% of winners choose to remain anonymous when they win the lottery, for obvious reasons.
In Michigan, out of 2,131,536 tickets sold, 76,803 of them won at least $4. Better than nothing, but not quite $850 million.
According to the Mega Millions site, there were 142 people who won the $10,000 prize. Twenty-two of these people were Megaplier winners, so their total was actually $40,000. Then there were 3,179 people who won the $500 prize. A total of 1,353 people were Megaplier winners and won $800.
What Are the Odds?
This time around, the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302 million. Let’s compare these to other odds. The odds of winning the $1 million McDonald’s Monopoly game was 1 in 451,822,158. The odds for the Powerball jackpot is about 1 in 292,000,000.
Your odds of dying from an asteroid, becoming a movie star, and getting struck by lightning are all more likely than winning the lottery.
Your odds of being injured on the toilet? That’s about 1 in 10,000. So don’t watch the drawing this Tuesday on the toilet, then the odds will really be against you.
