While she may have her critics, Melania Trump scored higher marks among Republicans for her convention speech than the rest of the Trump family.
Around 62 percent of Republicans favored Melania. Additionally, 33 percent of overall respondents gave the first lady high marks, according to the Morning Consult/Politico poll. When combining positive and negative ratings for a net result, Melania had a higher approval rating than the rest of the family. She had a zero net rating while President Donald Trump had a negative 13 net approval rating.
Melania Trump called for peace and unity in her speech.
In her Republican National Convention speech, Melania commented on current events in the country. She mourned those who died from the coronavirus pandemic and discussed racial tensions in the wake of George Floyd.
“I urge people to come together in a civil manner so we can work and live up to our standard American ideals. I also ask people to stop the violence and looting being done in the name of justice,” she said. “Like many of you, I have reflected on the racial unrest in our country. We are not proud of parts of our history.”
Melania asked scored higher than her stepdaughter Ivanka, who gave a speech of her own. People online commented on a potential hostile exchange between the two during the RNC. Melania gave Ivanka a “cold” look. A memoir released by Melania’s ex-friend Stephanie Winston Wolkoff detailed hostility between Melania and Ivanka. The first lady plotted to prevent Ivanka from appearing in President Trump’s inauguration photos, according to the book.
In Ivanka’s speech, she called her father the “People’s President.” She played to the president’s strengths while noting his penchant for Twitter.
“Donald Trump did not come to Washington to win praise from the beltway elites,” Ivanka said. “Donald Trump came to Washington for one reason, and one reason alone: To Make America Great Again.”
