Miranda Lambert Opens Up About Being with Blake Shelton During Loss of His Brother, Writing ‘Over You’

Miranda Lambert is speaking out about what it was like to help Blake Shelton find closure through the loss of his older brother.

After four years together, country stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert called it quits on their marriage back in 2015. However, throughout those four years, they share both their highs and lows together.

Miranda Lambert on Creating ‘Over You’

In a recent interview with Essentials Radio on Apple Music, Lambert reflects on a “special moment” she shared with Blake Shelton.

In 2011, Lambert debuted her hit song “Over You” with the help of Shelton. The collaboration was blissfully everything she could have hoped for, saying she was “so glad” for the opportunity to work with Blake.

The song’s inspiration drew from an unlikely source, however.

Back in 1990, Blake Shelton was just 14-years-old. His older brother, Richie, was 24 at the time. According to Country Fancast, “Richie’s 20-year-old girlfriend was driving over a hill and slammed into the back of a school bus picking up passengers. Richie, his girlfriend, as well as her 3-year-old son all died as a result of the tragic accident.”

Miranda Lambert opens up about what it was like learning the unfortunate news from Shelton.

“My ex-husband, Blake, had lost a brother, and it’s one of those moments where even if you’re married to someone, sometimes you find something new about them,” Lambert explains. “Dudes don’t open up about things, but he started telling me about the experience of it all. And I was like, ‘Have you ever written about it?’”

Blake Shelton’s Father’s Words Following the Tragic Accident

The 37-year-old artist continued, saying that Shelton declined her advice. He went on to reveal the somber words his father used to tell him in the wake of the death.

“‘You don’t get over it. You just get used to it.’”

Miranda Lambert didn’t give up, though. She asked her now 44-year-old ex-husband if he wanted to write it with her to help with much-needed closure.

“And I was like, ‘Well, could we write it? Do you want to try, or is that invasive?’”Miranda Lambert recalled asking Shelton. “‘I would never try to write your story because I didn’t live it, but maybe I could help because I’m an outside perspective, but I feel your pain talking to me right now.’”

Blake Shelton agreed, and the two created the song, “Over You.” The hit went on to be named Song of the Year at the 2012 CMA Awards.

“It was really a special moment, and I’m so glad we shared that song and that it helped his family heal, to have that together,” says Lambert.

In fact, towards the end of the music video, a gravestone with Blake’s last name is pictured.

The two have both moved on in their relationships. Miranda Lambert tied the knot with Brendan McLoughlin, while Blake Shelton recently got engaged to Gwen Stefani.
