‘NCIS: Hawai’i’ Star Vanessa Lachey Talks with Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos About Starring Role as Jane Tennant

Following the epic series premiere of her new show NCIS: Hawai’i, Vanessa Lachey made a special appearance on Live With Kelly and Ryan on Monday (September 27th) to share more details about the latest spin-off in the NCIS franchise.

While chatting about Lachey’s new role as the female-led on NCIS: Hawai’i, Ripa praised the character. She even called her a boss lady. Lachey’s response to that comment was, “Does that mean, you’re afraid of me? Does that mean you’re afraid of me or do you think I can take charge?”

Ripa’s answered Lachey’s question with, “Yes! You can take charge.”

Lachey asked Kelly Ripa’s husband’s Mark Consuelos, who is co-hosting with Ripa this week, if the NCIS crew could write him in as her character’s ex-husband. “I make a great ex-husband,” Consuelos joked. He also asked Lachey if she’d rather be loved than respected or feared. Everyone answered on stage, “Feared.”

NCIS: Hawai’i premiered on September 20th. The show follows the NCIS team that is stationed in the Pearl Harbor office. Lachey’s character, Jane Tennant, is the lead on the show.

Vanessa Lachey Opens Up the Life Changes She’s Made Since Taking on the ‘NCIS’ Role

While also chatting with CBS’ Matt Weiss on Monday, Vanessa Lachey shares details about the life changes after accepting the role as Jane Tennant in NCIS: Hawai’i. “Then I heard about NCIS: Hawai’i and booked the job by mid April. I was surprised and my career took a complete left turn,” Lachey recalled. “But I’m so glad things went the way they did. Now here we are and I’m living in Hawaii.”

Lachey also described the NCIS franchise as “evolving” to show more of the personal life and vulnerabilities of the family and characters on the shows. “We try to stay true to what NCIS is but we also want to add some layers that set it apart.”

When talking about her NCIS character, Lachey stated that it is an honor to play Jane Tennant. The actress also shared that Jane Tennant’s key quality is that she doesn’t take no for an answer. “She will continue to strive for what she wants in a male dominated profession and at the same time, do it with grace.”

Lachey goes on to add that the NCIS character is leading 44 special agents while also thinking about her kids. But the character is still a vulnerable woman who just want to be loved.

“When I got the job I completely broke down because I said to myself, I can do this, I am her, I believe in her, I know what she stands for. I felt like this is me.”
