President Biden just welcomed a new puppy, Commander, to the family. A new Tweet released by the President’s official Twitter account gives us a new look. The newest resident of the White House seems to have tons of energy. The German Shepard Pup seems to be adjusting just fine.
“Meet the newest Biden,” the President tweeted.
The video, which says “Welcome home commander,” shows Commander greeting president Biden with a wagging tail. The president throws a ball for the dog. Biden and the first lady walk Commander around the grounds, and Commander enjoys the White House’s Christmas display.
Earlier this month, a spokesperson for Dr. Jill Biden told CNN that they absolutely do have a new dog. Commander was a gift to Joe and Jill Biden from Joe Biden’s brother, James Biden, and his sister-in-law, Sara Biden. Commander was given to Joe Biden for his birthday. The President turned 79 on November 20th.
Commander may look like a big boy, but he’s definitely still a puppy. He was born on September 1st of this year, making him only a few months old.
The New Adoption Follows The Passing of President Biden’s Dog Champ
Sadly, Joe Biden’s last German Shepherd, champ, passed away at 13 years old earlier this year.
“Our hearts are heavy today as we let you all know that our beloved German Shepherd, Champ, passed away peacefully at home,” President Biden and The White House staff released in a statement. “He was our constant, cherished companion during the last 13 years and was adored by the entire Biden family.”
“In our most joyful moments and in our most grief-stricken days, he was there with us, sensitive to our every unspoken feeling and emotion,” President Biden also said of his passing.
Losing a dog is never easy, but in time, President Biden and the family have been able to accept Commander into the flock.
Their other German Shepherd, Major, who had problems adjusting to life at the white house, will remain at the Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware. Major had a handful of aggressive incidents with members of the White House Staff.
“After consulting with dog trainers, animal behaviorists, and veterinarians, the first family has decided to follow the experts’ collective recommendation that it would be safest for Major to live in a quieter environment with family friends,” Michael LaRosa, press secretary for Jill Biden, said in a statement.
Commander won’t be the only new pet the Bidens will welcome to the White house. President Biden has announced that they’re also adopting a cat. The cat has been fostered by a family for months and will finally move to her home at the White House in January of 2022.
