Major League Baseball took a backseat on Wednesday night thanks to the annual Congressional Baseball Game between Republicans and Democrats.

The Congressional Baseball Game is a longstanding tradition for lawmakers. Coming from both sides of the aisle, United States Congress Members have been partaking in the bipartisan event since 1909. Of course, the game of baseball is beloved by millions of people in the U.S. So, seeing the top dogs in Washington D.C. walk up to the plate never gets old.

Meanwhile, the game has become more than just entertainment over the last 100 years. Its widespread popularity now contributes to a foundation called the Congressional Sports for Charity that supports Washington D.C. area charities. Some of those include The Washington Literacy Center, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, and Washington Nationals Philanthropies. It also contributes to the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund in gratitude to the brave officers at the Republican practice shooting on June 14, 2017.

With President Joe Biden in attendance at Nationals Park on Wednesday night, the Congressional Baseball Game led to some wild highlights. Some of them were good, some of them were bad, and some of them were downright hilarious. Former NFL punter turned social media star Pat McAfee even got a kick out of what he was seeing. He posted a clip of the game where he narrates what is happening right from his couch.

“WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST TURN ON??” he captioned the hilarious video.

As far as baseball fans go, they didn’t hold back with their thoughts on social media. Many of them weren’t amused by the game in the least bit.

“Wait, the government is about to shut down and they still have money to rent out a stadium?” one fan asked.

“Whoever loses is going to cry corruption anyway,” another person commented.

And finally, one fan gave credit to McAfee for his impressive commentating skills.

“This man can commentate bingo at the senior center and make it electric.”

First Out-of-the-Park Homerun in More than 40 Years Hit at Congressional Baseball Game

It wasn’t all bad at the 2021 Congressional Baseball Game. As a matter of fact, we saw the first out-of-the-park home run hit in more than 40 years. That impressive accomplishment went to Republican Congressman Greg Steube.

The Republican team found themselves down 8-5 in the third inning when Steube, 43, crushed one into left field. Thankfully, there is a highlight of that play floating around on social media as well. Have a look down below:

“@RepGregSteube hits ‘first out-of-the-park homerun in #ConressionalBaseballGame in more than 40 years. A bonafide major league homerun.'”

Even though most of the game wasn’t very fundamentally sound, at least we can all agree it was entertaining to watch.
