How do those words taste Nick Saban? The Alabama head coach laughed off the idea that Jimbo Fisher and his Texas A&M Aggies would roll over the Tide when the teams faced off on Saturday. Now, if we can all turn our attentions to the scoreboard.
Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher told a fan in the off-season that he would eventually beat Saban’s “a**” on the field. A reporter asked Saban about the comment then, and he laughed it off. “In golf?” Saban said with a laugh. It was a decent joke. But one that aged about as well as fish left in a hot car. Fisher didn’t back down when asked about it weeks later.
“Heck yes I think we’re going to beat them,” Fisher said. “That’s why we’re here. They’re the standard right now, but we have to learn to beat them.”
In fairness to Saban, he had no reason to worry about the Aggies heading into Saturday. The Tide was undefeated, No. 1 in the country, and the unranked Aggies have only beaten Bama twice in school history. Once in 1968 and again in 2012 to give them a 2-11 overall record heading into Saturday.
Make that 3-11.
Fisher kept his promise as the Aggies unseated Alabama 41-38 in Texas. You can see how the infamous 12th man fans reacted to win in the clip below.
Saban was humbled and less cocky after the game.
“I have great respect for him. I always say that. He is one of the best who ever did it,” Saban said on the CBS broadcast after the loss to Texas A&M. “I learned a lot when I coached from him, and we had a lot of good times.”
Fisher worked as Saban’s offensive coordinator from 2000-2004 when the two worked at LSU.
Alabama May Drop Out of Top 5 in New Poll
It’s hard to believe but Alabama probably isn’t going to be in the Top 5 this week. The Tide has lived there so long that they were considering adding a pool. But the last-second 28-yard Texas A&M field goal Saturday daggered those plans and shook up the college football world.
According to CBS, Alabama will likely fall to No. 7 after the team’s stunning loss. The nation’s new top team is the Georgia Bulldogs. The Dawgs put together another impressive win Saturday after they dismantled another SEC rival in Auburn 34-10.
Iowa, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, and Ohio State will round out the Top 5.
Alabama takes on Mississippi State in Mississippi, but the eyes of the SEC will move to Georgia. The Bulldogs face off against Kentucky in a battle of the unbeaten. The Wildcats upset LSU 42-21 on Saturday, making this week’s SEC East showdown one of the most consequential of the year so far.
