In the 2020 edition of the Daytona 500, Ryan Newman suffered one of the most brutal car crashes in recent memory.
Coming down the final lap of the race, Ryan Newman was bumped by Ryan Blaney, causing him to veer and hit the wall at near-max speed. After another collision, the car was set alight and nearly stripped to its barest bones.
Unfortunately, the 2021 Daytona 500 will not be a redemption story for Newman. Along with at least 15 other drivers, Newman is now out for the count. You can watch video of the chaos below.
It’s a pretty bad beat for Newman. Both in 2020 and 2021, he didn’t really play much of a factor in causing the wrecks. However, that is the nature of NASCAR and he’ll be the first to say it happens.
Upon further review of the video, it’s even more brutal due to how close Newman was from escaping the wreck. As a flurry of cars attempt to get out of the way, Newman is hit from his side and spun out into the grass.
After last year, Newman is likely thankful he’s able to participate in the Daytona 500 again. But that won’t take the sting of having his day cut out 15 laps in from him, or from his fans.
Ryan Newman Fans Respond to Crash
Many NASCAR fans were unhappy to see Newman affected by the crash. After his comeback from a brain bruise, many fans wanted to see him at least complete the race and do well.
Ask @BPMsince1996, who likely sums up the sentiment best.

“Poor Ryan Newman.. but thank goodness not a repeat of the scare he gave us last year in this race. Maybe next year for him… 3rd times the charm”
A user awesomely named @WindTunnelGuy doesn’t want people to forget that it’s impressive that Newman was here in the first place.
“So sad to see Ryan Newman out. So glad to see him coming back after his horrific crash.”
