The Giants are 0-3. And after losing in a last-second field goal Sunday to the Atlanta Falcons, team owner John Mara reportedly took out his frustration on a pair of trashcans. Mara allegedly busted the bins seconds after the ball sailed through the uprights and a few hours after fans booed him as he spoke at a ceremony for Eli Manning.
The New York Post said that reporters heard a loud bang coming from the Giants executives suite just after the Falcons kicked the game-winning field goal Sunday. They walked out to see the trash cans on the floor.
Mara declined to comment on the incident after the game, but reporters documented the scene. This wouldn’t be the first time John Mara took out his frustrations on office equipment. He threw chairs around the owner’s box in a viral video from 2018 after the Giants lost to the Eagles.
This is the second week in a row that the Giants have lost in the closing seconds of a game. The team lost to division rivals Washington last week 30-29. Fans are clearly frustrated, as well. And they let John Mara know it during a halftime ceremony for Eli Manning. The team retired Manning’s No. 10 jersey and welcomed him to the Ring of Honor.
Fans loudly booed Mara as he spoke about Manning’s days behind center.
Later, he told reporters he understood why they booed him. “I would boo, too. We’re 0-2 and down at the half,” he reportedly said, via the Post.
Players said it was unfair to boo Mara.
“I don’t think that’s fair to Mr. Mara,” running back Saquon Barkley said. “He’s done a great job.”
Though, what else would you expect the star running back to say about the man who signs his checks?
Eli Manning Thanks Giants Teammates, Owners
While Giants fans haven’t had much to be happy about this season, they still have their memories. And that was clear when Eli Manning returned to the field Sunday with former teammates to join the team’s Ring of Honor. He and former wide receiver David Tyree even recreated the famous “helmet catch” from Super Bowl 42. Or infamous if you’re a Patriots fan.
Manning thanked the team, the fans, and his family for their years of support — even during the times when they wanted to kick a trashcan over the team’s play.
“Being a part of the New York Giants organization has been one of the great joys of my life,” he said during the ceremony. “I’m indebted to so many wonderful coaches and great teammates. I’m lucky that I still get to call so many of them mentors and friends now. This day would not be possible without the love and support of my family. It was easy for everyone to celebrate the wins, but you were the ones that were with me all the time and had my back, and picked me up when I was down.”
The Giants will travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints Sunday. Hopefully, no office furniture will be harmed during the game. Caesars Superdome has had enough problems recently.
