On Tuesday evening, Indianapolis Colts punter Rigoberto Sanchez shared an update on his recent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and thanked fans for their support.
The Colts punter shared a heartfelt message on his official Twitter account for his followers and fans. Sanchez underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a cancerous tumor, although he did not reveal the location of it. He said the surgery went well and that he has been “overwhelmed” by the support he has received since announcing the diagnosis.
“Surgery went well. Overwhelmed by all the love and support everyone sent my way,” he wrote on Twitter.
Sanchez Shares Cancer Diagnosis, Likely Out for Season
On Monday, Sanchez shared a lengthy message on Instagram revealing his diagnosis and plans for immediate surgery. He said that nothing could have prepared him for this challenging situation. However, he promised to try to “come back stronger than ever.”
“Like I said before, it’s always God’s plan and it will always be bigger than my plans. So grateful to be surrounded by doctors that helped me catch the cancerous tumor before it spread all over my body,” he wrote. “I will be getting surgery on Tuesday and I know that it will not be an easy bump on the road, but I know I have my amazing wife supporting me along with family, coaches, and friends reaching out.”
“Unfortunately, there are things you can’t control in life and this is one of them,” Sanchez continued. “No plans or preparation would have gotten me ready for this kind of adversity, but like I told my wife, we can’t flinch. Keep striving to come back stronger than ever.”
“Makes me sick that I’ll have to miss some time playing beside my brothers. But I know they will hold it down. I will be watching. Love y’all. #God’sPlan #ColtsNation,” he concluded.
On Sunday, Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship took over kickoff duties from Sanchez, the Indianapolis Star reported. Yet, Sanchez still punted five times during the Colts game against the Tennessee Titans. Additionally, he also performed the Colts’ onside kick attempt towards the end of their 26-45 loss to the Titans.
The punter didn’t kickoff for Indianapolis because of what head coach Frank Reich called a “physical issue.”
