New York Jets starting quarterback Sam Darnold is doubtful for the team’s Monday Night Football Matchup against the New England Patriots. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter broke the news of Darnold’s situation on Saturday with a tweet.
“Jets’ head coach Adam Gase said quarterback Sam Darnold won’t practice today,” Schefter writes. “And is doubtful to play Monday against the Patriots.”
The Jets are off to a putrid start in the 2020 season, having lost each of the eight games they have played in. The much-maligned Darnold has been a reason for the lack of success. The quarterback has also been bothered by a nagging shoulder injury. According to ESPN, Darnold suffered an AC joint sprain playing against the Denver Broncos on October 1. The injury cost him two games. Upon his return to the starting lineup, Darnold reaggravated the injury in a 35-9 loss to the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs.
Jets Head Coach Adam Gase was optimistic Darnold might play early in the week. That optimism began to fade as the week progressed.
“Obviously, he was going to do everything he could to go in this game,” Gase said. “As practice went on, he felt like there were some throws he wasn’t comfortable with. When he threw them, he didn’t feel like he got the right velocity that he wanted on the ball.”
Gase says backup quarterback Joe Flacco will get the start Monday night if Darnold is unable to go. It would be the former Super Bowl Champion’s third start in the 2020 season.
Jets Fans Sound Off on Social Media
It’s another setback for Darnold as he tries to hang on to his starting gig with the Jets. He is struggling to get the Jets’ offense on track this season. Through eight games this year, the Jets’ offense has managed only seven touchdowns. The young quarterback has gone three straight games without a touchdown pass and ranks 29th out 31 quarterbacks in total quarterback ratings (QBR).
Jet’s fans are understandably upset with the lack of production from the offense. When news broke of Darnold’s availability status for Monday Night Football, many fans took to social media to express their frustrations.
Here are some Twitter reactions to Darnold’s injury status and the staggering Jets’ offense.
