Sometimes, brothers are just trying to look out for each other. We’re sure that’s what Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt is thinking with his replies to his brother, J.J.
In the latest developments revolving J.J. Watt’s free agency saga, T.J. is making sure he’s in on the news. In a quote-tweet response to the former Houston Texans defensive lineman’s tweet, T.J. channels Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
If Pittsburgh Steelers fans think they’re anxious for J.J., T.J. Watt must be losing his mind. The young NFL star already plays alongside brother and fullback Derek. Now, a trio of Watt brothers could all hit the field together if the chips fall the right way.
Other NFL Brother Trios
That wouldn’t actually be the first time they’ve all played in the same game. Last year, the trio famously hit the field together when the Houston Texans and Pittsburgh Steelers faced off.
Interestingly enough, they aren’t even the first trio of brothers to ever do it. In fact, Tremaine, Terrell and Trey Edmunds did the same in 2019 when the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills squared up.
The Edmunds were the first trio of brothers to play together since 1928. Nearly 100 years ago, Joe, Bill and Cobb Rooney all played for the Duluth Eskimos together.
They may not end up being the first, but the Watt brothers could still become part of a unique and exclusive group by joining the Rooney brothers.
Getting T.J. Watt and J.J. Watt on Pittsburgh Steelers
As badly as T.J. and Steelers fans may want it, it will require some work. According to Spotrac, Pittsburgh is already in the negatives in terms of salary cap space by being $14,238,547 over the expected limit.
It’s a case of bad timing, really. The COVID-19 pandemic is likely going to bring the salary cap for NFL teams down in 2021.
However, it’s not a done-and-dusted situation yet. J.J. Watt could very much take a pay cut, and the Steelers have an entire offseason of moves to make. It won’t be simple, and it might not be pretty considering who the team might cut, but if they want J.J. Watt bad enough, they can get him.
