There’s no telling when Tiger Woods will be able to take a swing on a golf course again following his recent car crash. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to see him hit the links soon. The golf icon recently inked a deal with PGA Tour 2K.
TMZ reported on the deal Wednesday. The length of the deal or the size of the contract wasn’t disclosed. Not only will players get the chance to play as Woods again, but the links legend will also serve as “executive director” for the franchise.
This marks Woods return to the pixelated putting green since 2013. Electronic Arts sold millions of copies of Tiger Woods PGA Tour from 1999 until 2013. But as Woods aged and missed more and more tournaments because of back problems, his draw as game spokesman diminished. EA began to include other players on the cover along with Woods until Rory McIlroy replaced him in 2014. The games studio hasn’t released a PGA Tour game since.
“EA Sports and Tiger Woods have made a mutual decision to end our partnership, which includes Tiger’s named PGA Tour golf game,” wrote an EA Sports statement back in 2013.
“We’ve always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.”
However, after what might be the greatest comeback story in golf history in 2019 — when Woods won the Masters Championship — fans started asking for an updated version of the game.
It never came, but EA’s competitors are giving him another chance. And the fact that he will have some hand in designing the game opens up a lot of fun and interesting possibilities.
Rory McIlroy says Tiger Woods Doing Better
Tiger Woods has been in a hospital since crashing his car on February 23. He suffered serious leg injuries after his SUV crossed a median and then hit a tree.
Doctors said Woods’s severely fractured his tibia and fibula. Doctors had to stabilize the broken bones with a metal rod and set this fractured ankle with several screws. But the golfing great hasn’t lacked for visitors since being rushed by ambulance to the hospital. One visitor was Rory McIlroy who gave fans an update on Woods’ condition.
“I’ve spoken to him a little bit,” McIlroy said. “He’s doing better. I think all the guys have reached out to him and hopefully, if things go well over the next week or so he might be able to get home and start recovery at home, which would be great for him, so, see his kids, see his family. He’s doing better and just I think all of us are wishing him a speedy recovery at this point.”
