An era is ending today as Jimmie Johnson wraps up his final full season with NASCAR. His long-time boss, Rick Hendrick is sending a heartfelt message to the stock car driver.
After driving for the Hendrick Motorsports team for two decades, it’s only fitting that Rick Hendrick is getting emotional in this farewell video.
The video starts with a one-shot of Hendrick. He starts by saying, “Jimmie, I knew you were gonna be good, but man, I had no idea you were gonna win all these championships… five in a row. And you know, do it with class. I think that’s what impressed everybody as music as the championships, is that you have no enemies.”
He goes on to say that he’s super nice to everybody and is a great ambassador for NASCAR. Hendrick says, “You’re just perfect buddy.”
The race team owner admits he’s emotional in the video, and that he’s going to be emotional as Johnson makes his last laps in the purple and silver car in Phoenix. He thanks him for all he’s done, not just for NASCAR, but for the Hendrick team as well.
Meanwhile, the video is showing a slow-moving collage of pictures spanning his time with the motorsport conglomerate. Even though Johnson’s leaving NASCAR full-time, Hendrick says he can’t wait to see what’s in the racecar driver’s future.
Jimmie Johnson Set to Make Final Laps in NASCAR
NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson announced his retirement from stock car racing last year. Johnson’s final NASCAR race will be Sunday (Nov. 8) at the Phoenix Raceway in the Cup Series finale.
Johnson’s fellow racers will be honoring him during his final race by sporting a similar yellow color on their cars. He’s been known for the color throughout his career.
Although he might be walking away from NASCAR full-time, Johnson’s getting behind the wheel of an IndyCar. He will be racing for Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar road and street courses.
